LEARNING FROM MAWLANA JALALUDDİN RUMİ

LEARNİNG FROM MAWLANA JALALUDDİN RUMİ

AVOIDING HASTE

Rushing, adversely affects many a task; you must undertake what you wish to do slowly, but steadily. Do not forget that Allah enables a person to mature slowly, over a time span of forty years.
There are many affairs that are contingent upon time and Divine decree, which take shape not according to our haste, but in line with their own natural course. Failing to see this reality and impulsively rushing into something serves only to ruin it. For instance, it takes nine months for a child to be born into this world. Rushing for the birth to take place intolerably early and intervening to this end serves no other purpose than to harm and even destroy that child. The extent to which the fruit and vegetables grown non-seasonally with chemicals, pesticides and hormones threaten our health is also self-evident.
In short, the best course of action is always that realised with diligence. It is for this reason that the Messenger of Allah, upon him be peace and blessings, has stated: "Calmness and patient deliberation is from Allah whereas haste is from Satan."

GREED

Greed, or the ambition to acquire worldly blessings, forces a person to extend a hand to that they have no right to.
Greed and avarice towards the blessings of the world is the result of the peaking of the human ego. Those entering this path gain nothing save causing harm to both themselves and others.

HUNGER

Taste stems from hunger, not from tastefully prepared food. In hunger, even barley bread is sweeter than sugar.
The intensity of all desires is proportional to the appetite that forms the basis for their procurement. For instance, even the most valuable knowledge will become futile and even an encumbrance for a person who does not have the desire and enthusiasm to learn. That is, the value of a bounty and something of benefit becomes apparent with the need for that bounty or thing reaching a peak.

JUSTICE AND OPPRESSION

If a judge intends upon accepting a bribe, they cannot distinguish an oppressor from the oppressed.
Actions are judged according to intentions. Righteous deeds cannot manifest themselves when intention is corrupt. A straight line cannot emerge from a crooked ruler. The shadow of the crooked is also crooked.

LOVE AND SUFFERING

Just as justice cannot be realised without a witness, love cannot surface without pain and suffering.
Divine love requires sacrifice and is attained with the abandonment of fleeting, transient loves for its sake.
Human beings pay the greatest price and make the greatest sacrifice for their love, as everyone endures sacrifice for the one whom they love to the degree of their love. When love reaches perfection, sacrifice and its resultant suffering also reaches a pinnacle. Suffering and pain then become ease and pleasure.
A mountain bearing a few silver coins is that which is mined
In the same way that a tree that is to bear fruit must be prepared for the stones that will rain upon it, a person who aims to possess favourable qualities must be ready to endure the bitter and sweet things that these qualities will cause them to undergo. This is because some will travel about these qualities with good intention, in order to receive benefit from these, some bearing feelings of jealousy with a mind to destroy these and others still, to steal from them. It must not be forgotten that Satan too strives more against those with good deeds. Where has a thief robbing a thrift shop ever been seen! What excites his interest is the jewellery store.

PRAISING ALLAH

The power of Allah is endless. Similarly, speaking of and praising Him is also without end or limit.
The quality and description of every being in existence is to the extent of their limitation. From this perspective, all beings are limited. Human beings included... However, due to His being eternal with every one of His attributes, praise and mention of Allah Almighty is also eternal. Notwithstanding how much he is praised and spoken of, He cannot be praised completely and as He deserves. That is to say, it is not possible to understand and explain the limitless with the limited. The key criterion at this point is Allah's name al-Subhan; that is, His being above and beyond all deficiencies, limitations and imperfections, His being the Owner of all the perfect and eternal Attributes, and His being absolutely beyond any human conception. In short, He is also free from and beyond being within the confines of our human description, representation or explanation.

REASON AND REFLECTION

O brother and sister! You must find life with tafakkur (reflection). Your body, with respect to its bone and blood, is the same as that of animals. If your reflection is a rose, you are in a garden of roses. If however, you think like a thorn, (if you are overcome by your carnal desires) you are fuel for the fire.
With respect to their body and carnal self, human beings are no different from other beings. That which distinguishes humans from other beings is their subtle contemplation, profundity of emotion and richness of feeling. When these qualities are used correctly and appropriately, they enable a person to develop spiritually and elevate them to a level higher than that of the angels. However, when a person loses these qualities through their being defeated by their carnal soul, they stumble to a rank lower than that of animals.
Reason is not for feeling subsequent regret and remorse, but to ponder and take precaution.
If reason is used in the way of carnality, the result is only regret and lamentation. However, reason has been bestowed to us not to cause a person to lament and cry in such a way, but to collect the pearls of truth on the straight path and take precaution against the intrigues of Satan. Consequently, its actual value is commensurate with its averting mistakes through calculating the end of every undertaking. In other words, reason is acceptable and valuable only to the extent of its being good sense and sound judgement.
Even a dog does not eat a bone or bread thrown its way without smelling it first.
Every task and behaviour must first be weighed with sound judgement. The failure of humankind to show the care that even a dog shows in this regard is the means for their losing their honour and integrity. It is for this reason that when someone was praised in his presence Allah's Messenger, upon him be peace and blessings, he used to ask, "How is their soundness of judgement?"
Reason is essential, but a person must possess enough reason to know that reason is limited.
A reason that does not know its limitations resembles a ship with a broken rudder, in the middle of the ocean. The direction in which it is to be dragged and the whirlpool in which it will vanish is unknown. In this respect, reason is more valid and useful to the extent that it is able to determine its boundaries. More precisely, reason only gains perfection and rank within the boundaries of revelation.
The rupture caused by foolishness and ignorance cannot be mended. O people of counsel, do not sow your seeds of wisdom rigidly therein!
Perception of wisdom is realised only by means of the harmony between a sound judgement and sound heart. It is therefore impossible for the senseless to discern wisdom. Attempting to teach them wisdom is a struggle in vain, like the raindrops falling in the desert or on hard rock and thus going to waste.
IGNORANCE
Be as silent as a book in the presence of an ignorant person
An ignorant person is deprived of awareness and perception. They are deaf and blind to the lofty truths explained to them. Even assuming an offending attitude, they can bring both themselves and others to the verge of destruction. Due to this, sometimes the best course of action is silence. 'Ali, may Allah be well pleased with him, therefore states:
"Do not insist on responding to a word spoken indecently, as one who utters it possesses many other such words with which they will again retort."
“Whatever you do, do not joke with an ignorant person. As their tongue is poisonous, they will injure your heart."

Showing us the sound path in the face of the ignorant, Allah Almighty states:
"The (true) servants of the All-Merciful are they who move on the earth gently and humbly, and when the ignorant, foolish ones address them (with insolence or vulgarity as befits their ignorance and foolishness), they response with (words of) peace, (without engaging in hostility with them)." (Furqan, 25:63.)

AFFLICTION, CURE AND PATIENCE

Affliction forever brings a person to maturity
Every kind of affliction causes its owner to gravitate to servanthood by enabling them to perceive their weakness and helplessness. It is owing to this that while bounties more often than not inflame carnal desires, trials and tribulations become a means to the reform of the carnal self through making it taste of weakness.
A rose's enduring its thorns made it beautiful in fragrance
In the same way that food cooks above fire and gains flavour thus, human beings acquire maturity and beauty of heart through patient endurance to the flames of trial and affliction. This is exactly like the rose's becoming the master of flowers through enduring its thorns. As the rose suffered its thorns, it sat upon the throne of sovereignty above them. The true accomplishment is to read and experience such currents and manifestations of Divine power in the universe.

Remedy seeks nothing in the world other than affliction
A righteous believer also resembles a remedy. Their most salient characteristic is their sharing the troubles and grief of all ill, destitute, lonely hearts wailing in sorrow, whether material or spiritual.
Most afflictions befall the Prophets, as reforming the immature and unrefined is an affliction in and of itself
Afflictions are of various kinds. The heaviest of these are the endless sufferings endured to guide the unrefined. As such a great burden is the obligatory mission of the Prophets first and foremost, the tribulations they faced outnumbered that experienced by other people. Following the Prophets, in patient endurance to these trials, are the righteous servants, scholars and then others.

ATHEISM IS BEING JUDGED!

ATHEISM IS BEING JUDGED!

The Criticism of Atheism

...
Atheism is not based on mind, logic or proof but on mere acceptance. For example, evolutionists, in response to the question “How did life come into being on earth?” say, “accidentally”. “How did other forms of life evolve and come into being out of one single cell?” this is “accidentally” too. So, “Is there any proof for these coincidences?” Of course, there is not. It is coincidence, namely mere accident, and there is not a rule or proof for it.

At this point, let us handle the question with regard to probability calculus:

Suppose that we have stamps in our hand numbered from 1 to 10. When we put these stamps into a bag and pick randomly from among them, we can pick the number 1 by one chance out of ten. Nevertheless, the probability of picking the stamps all in order from 1 to 10 is one out of 10 billion (10.000.000.000). Moreover, this is only a probability. In other words, when we repeat the action of picking the stamps and do it for 10 billion times, it is not certain that the stamps will exactly come out in order at the end.

If the probability of picking ten stamps all in order from 1 to 10 is 1 out of 10 billion, then what is the probability of the quite complex but orderly lining of the numberless atoms, cells and organs in our body? Think upon this for the bodies of all plants, animals and people.

Attributing all these to chance and accident arises only from bigotry and prejudgement. That is to say, atheists rely on an mere acceptance. They say, “I say so, and this is how it is.”

Martin Lings tells the following in his book “Ancient Beliefs and Modern Superstitions”:

Yves Delage, a former professor of zoology at Sorbonne University, says: “I accept that until now no one has come across a form that is the ancestor of another form, and that there is no single evidence to show that such a thing occurred even one time. But still I believe evolution to be true as though it was objectively proved. In short, science expects us to have faith in itself. Indeed, the idea of evolution is put forward as a kind of reality produced by inspiration. 2”

French geologist Paul Lemoine, who compiled the fifth volume (about living organisms) of Encyclopaedia Françoise, says the following after going through articles of various authors: “All of these show that evolution theory is in no way possible. In fact, contrary to how it seems, in effect, no one believes in evolution theory any more… Evolution is type of dogma that shepherds no longer believe but keep defending for the sake of the continuation of their herds.3”

In this regard, we can say that atheists are employing dominance to sell evolution. That is to say, a proofless claim is wanted to be sold to everybody as though it was a proven reality.

Let me tell a joke that is famous in Turkey:

Temel (a famous hero of jokes) asks a riddle to his friends “It is yellow, stays in cage and sings. Tell me what it is!” His friends tell the names of all species of singing birds such as canary, nightingale, etc. No matter what they said, Temel replied in the negative. Then they said “We couldn’t know; now you tell us!” Temel says “It is hamsi (a specific kind of fish available in the Black Sea, Turkey)” His friends got angry at him saying “Is it possible that a hamsi is yellow?” Temel replied, “I painted it.” They said “Could it stay in a cage?” “I put it there.” They said “Could it sing like a bird?” Then Temel laughs and says “And this is the puzzle in the riddle.”

Atheism is a riddle like that of Temel.

THE PROPHET MUHAMMAD'S (P.B.U.H) CONDUCT WITH PEOPLE

THE PROPHET MUHAMMAD'S (P.B.U.H) CONDUCT WITH PEOPLE

One of the companions of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon Him) Jabir Ibn Abdullah narrated,

"One day, people passed by carrying a corpse. The Messenger of Allah, Muhammad (p.b.u.h) stood up. We also did so.

Later, we said: 'O Messenger of Allah! It was the corpse of a Jew!'

He responded: 'IS HE NOT ALSO A HUMAN?' "

(Bukhâri,  Riqâq,26 ; Muslim,  Fadâil,17)

One day, the Messenger of Allah remembered a black slave and asked about him:

"What has happened to that person? I have not seen him for a while."

"He died, O Messenger of Allah." they responded.

The Prophet (p.b.u.h) reprimanded them:

"Why didn't you let me know?"

The companions then told Him what had happened to that slave. They had not considered the incident very important or thought it an unusual event. The Messenger of Allah said:

"Show me his grave!"

Then He went to his grave and prayed the funeral prayer.

(Bukhâri, Salât,72 ; Muslim, Janâiz,71 ; Abû Dâwûd, Janâiz,57 ; Ibn Mâjah, Janâiz,32 ; Ahmad Ibn Hanbal, al-Musnad, II, 353,388)

The Messenger of Allah never agreed with the abuse of slaves. He said that:

"Those who abuse their slaves cannot enter Paradise."

(Tirmidhî, Birr,29 ; Ibn Mâjah,Adab,10 ; Ahmad b. Hanbal, al-Musnad, I,7 ; Tabarânî, al-Mu'jam al-Awsat,IX, 124 ; Abû Ya'lâ, al-Musnad, I, 94)

The mercy of the Prophet (p.b.u.h) toward the slaves reached such a level that he refused to refer to them as "slave" or "maid", instead he advised and commanded Muslims to refer to them as "my son" or "my daughter".

(Bukhârî, Itk,17 ; Muslim, Alfaz, 13,15 ; Abû Dâwûd, Adab,75 ; Ahmad b. Hanbal, al-Musnad, II, 316,423)

P.S

p.b.u.h : peace be upon Him.

SURAH MARYAM (MARY) 16-36. VERSES FROM THE HOLY QURAN

16.
19:16
Sahih International

And mention, [O Muhammad], in the Book [the story of] Mary, when she withdrew from her family to a place toward the east.

17.
19:17
Sahih International

And she took, in seclusion from them, a screen. Then We sent to her Our Angel, and he represented himself to her as a well-proportioned man.

18.
19:18
Sahih International

She said, "Indeed, I seek refuge in the Most Merciful from you, [so leave me], if you should be fearing of Allah ."

19.
19:19
Sahih International

He said, "I am only the messenger of your Lord to give you [news of] a pure boy."

20.
19:20
Sahih International

She said, "How can I have a boy while no man has touched me and I have not been unchaste?"

21.
19:21
Sahih International

He said, "Thus [it will be]; your Lord says, 'It is easy for Me, and We will make him a sign to the people and a mercy from Us. And it is a matter [already] decreed.' "

22.
19:22
Sahih International

So she conceived him, and she withdrew with him to a remote place.

23.
19:23
Sahih International

And the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm tree. She said, "Oh, I wish I had died before this and was in oblivion, forgotten!"

24.
19:24
Sahih International

But he called her from below her, "Do not grieve; your Lord has provided beneath you a stream.

25.
19:25
Sahih International

And shake toward you the trunk of the palm tree; it will drop upon you ripe, fresh dates.

26.
19:26
Sahih International

So eat and drink and be contented. And if you see from among humanity anyone, say, 'Indeed, I have vowed to the Most Merciful abstention, so I will not speak today to [any] man.' "

27.
19:27
Sahih International

Then she brought him(Jesus) to her people, carrying him. They said, "O Mary, you have certainly done a thing unprecedented."
19:28
Sahih International

"O sister of Aaron, your father was not a man of evil, nor was your mother unchaste."

29.
19:29
Sahih International

So she pointed to him. They said, "How can we speak to one who is in the cradle a child?"

30.

19:30
Sahih International

[Jesus] said (in the cradle), "Indeed, I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet."

31.

19:31
Sahih International

"And He has made me blessed wherever I am and has enjoined upon me prayer and zakah as long as I remain alive."

32.

19:32
Sahih International

"And [made me] dutiful to my mother, and He has not made me a wretched tyrant."

33.

19:33
Sahih International

"And peace is on me the day I was born and the day I will die and the day I am raised alive."

34.

19:34
Sahih International

That is Jesus, the son of Mary - the word of truth about which they are in dispute.

35.

19:35
Sahih International

It is not [befitting] for Allah to take a son; exalted is He! When He decrees an affair, He only says to it, "Be," and it is.

36.

19:36
Sahih International

[Jesus said], "And indeed, Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. That is a straight path."

P.S.  Our Christian friends, brothers, sisters! You read, this is the story of Mary and his son Prophet Jesus in the Holy Quran. Dou you understand why the Muslims love Mary and Jesus? Because Allah (The One God) loves them. Allah exalts them in His Last Book Quran. We love Jesus very much. But Allah says in the same Quran, "Say, [O Muhammad], 'If you should love Allah , then follow me, [so] Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.' "(Surah Âl-i İmran, 3:31) So we love also Prophet Muhammad Besides Prophet Jesus.

KNOWLEDGE AND WISDOM

Islam joins knowledge and wisdom. Knowledge without wisdom harms mankind more than it benefits. As an example, knowledge of medicine without wisdom can be used to kill rather than cure.

Therefore the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) warns:

“Whoever increases his knowledge without increasing his asceticism and fear of Allah distances himself from Allah.”   (Kanz al-Irfân, 62)

- Islam is a religion of high morality: Man is envisaged as the peak of creation. He is the vicegerent of Allah on earth. Although he was created out of earth, Allah blew his spirit into his body. The holy Qur’an draws our attention to this fact and warns us not to let our souls be contaminated by our base desires. It advises man to purify his soul from vices and to reach Allah with a pure heart.

Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is the best example of one who has achieved this great purpose and has attained to the summit of morality. He has even stated that one of the main purposes of his prophethood was to exhibit the finest example of morality:

“Indeed, I was sent to complete the perfection of morality.” (Muwatta, al-Hulk, 7)

The Holy Qur’an bears witnesses to this fact and praises him with the following verse:

“And thou (standest) on an exalted standard of character.” (Qalam, 68:4)
